"When are you chatting with the band?" a text reads. "My request was to ask if I can be their fourth member."

There's just one problem: The author likewise desires to be the Haims' newest recruit. And we're in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile admirers have also coveted the position.

It's clear something is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey playing gigs at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are repeated Grammy Award contenders.

In the tradition of the greatest bands, they're a close trio. Their videos often feature them walking in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such pure happiness you inevitably think, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a bass'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the ultimate honour. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire people to make music."

"Therefore all are welcome to be the next Haim sister."

Award Recognition

The group have called into a break, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the accolade resonates with the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major milestone," continues Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the women that came before us."

Heartbreak and Humour

The album emerged from a period of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that odd transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The themes detail departures and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in blocking the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That developed confidence called for a fresh approach – more organic and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Humor

The trio's honesty fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating horror stories.

A former partner left Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Legacy

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their place in the industry.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an global following.

However Haim will always be their number one priority.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was a young child," says Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
