At least 13 passengers killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
