The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he claims was an “unintentional” offensive hand signal directed at attendees during a recent contest at MetLife Stadium.
Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. It was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the gesture was completely accidental, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the wrong finger,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”
Historical Precedent for Owner Fines
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been fined for misconduct. Previous cases include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, who is recognized for his media savvy, possesses an estimated net worth of around $16bn, so the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.
