A 60-day voyage through the Land Down Under is being halted in the wake of the fatal incident of an senior lady who was stranded by the vessel on a distant coastal location.

The elderly woman had been hiking on the tropical location with shipmates from the cruise ship, but broke off from the group for a rest. The vessel left without her and went back later that day after the crew became aware the passenger was not present.

An extensive search operation discovered her remains the next day.

Authorities are looking into the tragedy, alongside police and the official investigator.

Chief Executive of the cruise operator stated that guests and personnel on the vessel were told that the remainder of the cruise had been called off due to the "unfortunate death and prior technical problems".

In a statement, he added that passengers would be provided a total repayment, and said the operator was working "to organize the travel back of the individuals via chartered flights".

Officials also issued an updated statement, and said they had "delivered a directive to the Captain" prohibiting any new passengers from getting on the vessel.

The spokesperson said that they would inspect the ship in the port city upon its return.

The vessel first departed Cairns on the 24th of October, and was only 48 hours into the journey at the time of the senior passenger's death. The tropical location was the first stop on the journey.

Travelers on board - who typically pay tens of thousands of dollars to participate in the expedition - were taken there for a shore visit with the possibility of hiking or snorkeling.

Family Response

The offspring of the victim said that her loved ones was "surprised and grieved that the vessel left Lizard Island after an scheduled tour without my mother".

In her statement, she described her mum as an "energetic elderly person" who was a participant of a bushwalking club.

"Based on limited facts we have been told, it appears that there was a failure of responsibility and ordinary reasoning," she mentioned.

She added that she hoped the investigation would be able to identify what "the organization should have done that might have preserved Mother's existence".

"Based on information from the authorities that it was a exceptionally warm afternoon, and mum became unwell on the mountain ascent," she explained.

"Officials suggested her to go back, alone. Then the boat left, reportedly without conducting a passenger count.

"During some point in that chain of events, or soon after, mum died, alone."

Company Reaction

In a statement, the Head affirmed that the organization was "cooperating fully with officials to assist their inquiry".

He stated that the company was "extremely apologetic that this has occurred" and had extended its complete assistance to the family.

Cruise Industry Practices

The vessel accommodates up to a hundred twenty guests with 46 crew, according to corporate information. It was purpose-built to reach distant locations of Australia's shoreline and is equipped with "small boats" - small boats used to transport passengers on land visits.
