The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
