Pentagon Report Finds Defense Secretary Put Troops in Danger with Signal Conversation.

A highly anticipated Department of Defense report has determined that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by sharing secret information in a private Signal group, according to a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Event

The chat group in dispute contained details about a planned airstrike in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This discussion was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other individuals in the group reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials are not employed at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not approved for handling sensitive material.

Potential Threat to Forces

The inspector general's report determined that the information circulated by Hegseth was secret and posed a risk to the safety of US service members if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

Notably, the report acknowledged that Hegseth had the ability to downgrade the material he distributed, though it was unclear whether he formally did so.

Secretary's Response

The informed individual indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed details that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the operation. He added that he had the right to declassify material and viewed the investigation to be partisan.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been shared with Congress. An unclassified version is anticipated to be made public later this week.
